Interns at 20600 Eureka Rd Suite 500

Maya Allen, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Intern

Counseling Philosophy

What a wonderful step you are taking to explore yourself through mental healing! I’m Maya, and I am an intern here at Tree of Life Counseling Services. I am working towards completing my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling & Art Therapy at Wayne State University, and I am expecting to graduate spring/summer 2026. My passion is driven by the idea that each individual is entirely unique, creative, capable of personal growth towards personal goals at their own pace.

Counseling Orientation

My theoretical orientation is focused on a holistic person-centered approach first. I strive to give individuals the freedom to express themselves however they see fit each session. I strive to individualize care through a wide variety of therapeutic approaches to specific areas of need and personal goals of my clients, as all individuals are wonderfully unique. I also offer art therapy as a modality of healing in my practice.

Art Therapy

Creative expression as it is used in art therapy offers the opportunity to explore and express their own inner world in the form of creativity. Artwork can be a tool for individuals to better understand personal experiences that cannot always be put into words. Engaging in art therapy can be a rewarding experience no matter an individual’s creative skills, as there is always a chance to find purpose in artmaking.

Areas of Interest and Experience

Although I am happy to work with all walks of life at any age, I find interest in working with teens and young adults. I have experience facilitating a teen art therapy group as well as young adults individually. I work with individuals living with anxiety and depression, as well as navigating daily life and family/relationship dynamics. I also have experience in working with individuals with Type 1 Diabetes.

Office Location: Maya offers in-person appointments in our Taylor office and telehealth appointments.

Katie Hill, MA, LPC

My Counseling Philosophy

I believe that no two clients are the same, and that effective therapy must be tailored to the individual. I see therapy as a partnership where we work together toward your goals. Change takes effort from both of us, and with teamwork, growth and healing are possible. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered.

My Counseling Orientation

My counseling approach is flexible and tailored to you as an individual. I mainly use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy, along with other proven techniques, depending on what works best for you. In sessions, we often focus on understanding and changing unhelpful thought patterns, building healthy coping skills, and improving relationships. I also help clients find practical and realistic solutions to their current challenges. With my background in education and experience working with individuals with ADHD, learning differences, emotional challenges, and autism, I use strengths-based and practical strategies to support clients through difficult life transitions.

I specialize in supporting individuals with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship challenges, learning disabilities, and ADHD, helping them develop effective coping strategies and skills for daily life.

Cheyenne Brooks, MA, LPC, ATR - Art Therapist

Counseling Philosophy

When it comes to counseling, I know how intimidating it can be to reach out for help but know that making that first initial step is such a powerful effort in taking care of yourself. The most important part of this experience is that you are provided with an environment consisting of empathy, unconditional support and utmost respect so that you are able to achieve your therapeutic goals.

Counseling Orientation

I believe effective therapy recognizes the person as a whole, both our struggles and strengths. I incorporate creative arts and self-expressive interventions along traditional counseling philosophies, such as person-centered, narrative therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to assist you with achieving your therapeutic goals. Above all, my goal is to empower you to make the decisions you feel are right for you, as I truly believe that you are the expert on your own life. Together, we can work towards finding an avenue that will create room for you to discover how to become the best version of yourself. By working together, I hope to make the therapeutic process as comfortable and productive for you as possible.

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy involves the use of creative techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, etc. to assist people in expressing themselves creatively. Sometimes it is difficult to put into words what your struggles are, and art therapy allows an additional outlet of communication between an individual and their therapist. No artistic talent is necessary for art therapy to be successful. The goal of art therapy is all about exploring the relationship between what you create and what may be going on internally. I truly believe art has the power to be a vehicle for healing, exploration and self-discovery. The use of art therapy in our sessions is not a requirement but always an option.

Areas of Specialty

I have experience working with children, adolescents and adults alike in areas of trauma, grief and loss, anxiety and depression, sexuality and relationships, as well as self-esteem and exploring self-identity.

Qualifications

I am a State Board Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Art Therapist. I have completed a combined Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy.
